What should I do if I suspect my identity has been stolen?

We urge you to take these steps immediately:

Contact the three major credit reporting agencies. Ask them to place a fraud alert on your file to prevent credit products from being opened in your name without your authorization.

File a report with your local police. Even if the police can't catch the identity thief, having a police report can help you clear up your credit records later on.

Report the identity theft through the Federal Trade Commission’s website, www.IdentityTheft.gov and get a recovery plan. This resource provides an interactive checklist that will walk you through the recovery process and which recovery steps should be taken. It also provides sample letters and other helpful resources.  In addition, the site offers specialized tips for specific forms of identity theft, including tax-related identity theft.
